Things My Mother Taught Me

Household tips are truly at their best when they come from Mom. How about a few of these?

  • The next time you need to clean your blender, add water and a little dish detergent to it and then blend. This makes for an easy cleanup!
  • When I was little, we had to drive across country for one of our Navy moves. My parents did what they could to keep us busy during those long daily drives. Here is one of my favorite tricks that Mom invented for those last excruciating miles of our day.
  • The next time you go on a long car trip with your children, hide some lifesavers for the last hour of your ride. Wait until they are so bored they can’t stand it and then take them out. Give each child one lifesaver and tell them to try and make it last for five miles. Then give them a new one after each five mile increment. Of course you can adjust this to every ten minutes or whatever works best. You will soon find your children playing games to see who can make his or her lifesaver last the longest.

  • And finally, my Grandmother had a huge button collection that I would happily look through on rainy days. But it never occurred to me just how she got so many buttons. Then one day my mother saw I had thrown away an old shirt and asked why I had not cut the buttons off. I immediately pictured my grandmother during the depression, cutting buttons – saving every little thing she could. Now I will never throw away a worn shirt without cutting each and every button off.
